Can you believe it..? … seventeen years ago the first DBpedia dataset was released. Seventeen years of development, improvements and growth. Now more than 4,380 GByte of data is hosted on the DBpedia Databus. We want to take this as an opportunity to send out a big “Thank you!” to all contributors, developers, members, hosters, funders, believers and DBpedia enthusiasts who made that possible. Thank you for your support!
In the upcoming blog series, we will take you on a retrospective tour through 2024, giving you insights into a year with DBpedia. In the following we will also highlight our past events.
A year with DBpedia – Retrospective
DBpedia Training @ Data Week Leipzig 2024

The first highlight of the DBpedia year was the DBpedia training on “Harnessing the Power of DBpedia: Transforming Data into Knowledge” at the Data Week Leipzig 2024 on 16 April in the Leipzig City Hall. The Data Week is the networking and exchange event for highlighting scientific, economic, and social perspectives of data and its use, where industry, citizens, science, and public authorities can enter into dialogue and took place from 15 to 19 April. The training was opened by Milan Dojchinovski (InfAI, DBpedia Association, CTU in Prague) and focused on structured knowledge extraction and management and the participants gained insights into the comprehensive DBpedia technology ecosystem, including its various services and technologies. You can find the slides here.
DBpedia @ 12th Leipzig Semantic Web Day (LSWT)

The LSWT on 18 April took place during the Data Week Leipzig 2024 at the Leipzig City Hall and presented the latest developments and trends in semantic technologies and data with a focus on current challenges in the application of Large Language Models. At this year’s LSWT, Sebastian Hellmann (InfAI) presented “Databus: FAIR Data in Energy Systems Analysis”.
DBpedia Tutorial @ LREC-COLING 2024
In May 2024 we held an exciting DBpedia tutorial at the LREC-COLING 2024 which took place at the Lingotto Conference Centre in Torino, Italy. This tutorial introduced the DBpedia Databus. The focus was on how to manage, publish or to consume the data on the DBpedia Databus, with an exclusive focus on Linguistic Knowledge Graphs. An important goal of this tutorial was to familiarize the participants with the DBpedia Databus technology and to promote hands-on learning. Find out more about the LREC-COLING on the event website.
Google Summer of Code (GSoC)

For the 13th year in a row, we have been able to support and guide young, ambitious developers who joined us as an open source organization to work on a programming project over this summer. Each year we have been inspired by new project ideas, many amazing students, and mostly great project results that have shaped the future of DBpedia. If you want to have deeper insights in our GSoC contributors work you can find their blogs and repos on the DBpedia blog.
DBpedia Day @ SEMANTiCS in Amsterdam

DBpedia Day was once again part of the program at this year’s SEMANTiCS conference 2024. It was held on 17 September at the Theater de Meervaart in Amsterdam, Netherlands with up to 100 DBpedians. Once again this year, our CEO Sebastian Hellmann opened the DBpedia Day with the presentation “KG Operated by AI”. This was followed by the exciting keynote speech “Trust me, I’m a Human” by Ruben Verborgh from the Ghent University, Belgium.
Afterwards, we organized two DBpedia sessions with the topics “AI Applications on top of KGs” and “Design, Construction and Refinement of KGs by AI” with many interesting talks. All slides can also be found on our events page. The last session of the DBpedia day was the “Discussion Session on DBpedia and AI”.
We do hope we will meet you and some new faces during our events next year. The DBpedia Association wants to get to know you because DBpedia is a community effort and would not continue to develop, improve and grow without you. We also plan to be part of the next SEMANTiCS conference 2025.
DBpedia @ COST Action GOBLIN

On 15 October in Brussels, DBpedia participated in the first meeting of the new COST Action GOBLIN – Global Network on Large-Scale, Cross-domain and Multilingual Open Knowledge Graphs which focuses on the topics knowledge graph engineering, management, services, methods, use cases and applications.
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. In the meantime, stay tuned and check our Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn channels. You can subscribe to our Newsletter for the latest news and information around DBpedia.
